My smartphone stopped charging properly while still under the manufacturer’s warranty. I brought it to the authorised repair centre in Malta over two months ago and it is still ‘being assessed’. I use this phone for work and this delay is becoming a real problem. Is there a legal limit on how long a repair can take?

While Maltese law does not fix one universal number of days for every repair, the Consumer Affairs Act, Chapter 378 of the Laws of Malta, requires that any repair or replacement carried out under a guarantee or statutory conformity right be completed within a reasonable time and without significant inconvenience to the consumer, taking into account the nature of the goods and the purpose for which you need them. Two months for a common repair on a device you rely on for work is likely to exceed what counts as reasonable in most circumstances. Send the repair centre a written complaint referencing the delay, asking for a firm completion date or, alternatively, a replacement device or refund if the repair cannot be completed promptly. If they do not respond adequately, you can involve the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA), and ultimately bring a claim to the Consumer Claims Tribunal to compel a remedy.

I rented an apartment in Sliema for two years and moved out leaving it in reasonable condition, but the landlord is refusing to return my deposit, listing normal scuff marks and a slightly faded curtain as 'damage'. Is this something the Consumer Claims Tribunal can even help with, or is this a different process entirely?

I bought tickets to a concert in Malta from a ticket resale website, not the original organiser, paying a marked-up price. The event has now been officially cancelled and the original organiser is refunding face-value tickets, but the resale site is refusing to refund the markup I paid them. Do I have any claim against the resale platform?

A salesperson came to my house in Mosta unannounced and, after a long pitch, I ended up signing a contract for a water filtration system I did not really want. I signed the same evening under pressure and paid a deposit by card. Two days later I regretted it. Can I still cancel?

I cancelled a monthly subscription box service based in Malta through their app three months ago, and I even received a cancellation confirmation email at the time, but they have continued charging my card every month since. Support keeps saying my cancellation 'didn't go through' on their end.
