Subscription box service keeps charging me after I cancelled

I joined a gym in Sliema on what I thought was a monthly rolling membership, but three months in I found out the contract actually locks me in for 24 months with a heavy exit fee. Nobody explained this clearly when I signed up at the front desk. Can I get out of it?
Maltese consumer law places importance on traders giving clear, comprehensible pre-contractual information, and unfair or hidden terms in a standard consumer contract can be challenged under the unfair contract terms provisions linked to the Consumer Affairs Act, Chapter 378 of the Laws of Malta. If the tie-in period and exit fee were not made prominent and understandable before you signed, or were buried in fine print you were not given a fair opportunity to read, you may have grounds to argue the term is unfair and therefore not binding on you. Start by requesting a copy of the signed contract and reviewing exactly what was disclosed at the point of sale. Send the gym a written complaint setting out why you consider the term unfair and asking to exit without penalty. If they refuse, you can escalate to the Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) or file a claim with the Consumer Claims Tribunal, which can assess whether the specific clause is enforceable against you as a consumer.
