I had a serious disagreement with my manager at work in Malta over money I believe I was legitimately owed, and things got heated verbally. My employer is now threatening to report me to the police for ‘threatening behaviour’, which I think is a wild exaggeration of what actually happened. Can something like this really escalate into a criminal matter?

Yes, verbal conduct during a workplace dispute can, depending on exactly what was said and how it was perceived, potentially fall within the scope of offences under the Criminal Code, Chapter 9 of the Laws of Malta, relating to threats or threatening behaviour, even where the underlying dispute is fundamentally a civil or employment matter such as unpaid wages, since criminal and civil issues can arise from the same set of facts and are assessed independently of each other. Whether what actually happened genuinely meets the legal threshold for a criminal threat, as opposed to an angry but non-criminal exchange of words during a heated argument, depends heavily on the specific words used, the context, and how they would reasonably have been perceived, which is exactly the kind of assessment that benefits from a lawyer reviewing the actual facts rather than assuming either that nothing will come of it or that a report will automatically succeed. In the meantime, it is worth writing down your own detailed account of exactly what was said and done while it is fresh in your memory, and separately pursuing the underlying wage dispute properly through the Department of Industrial and Employment Relations, since that civil issue does not simply disappear because of the criminal threat.

Is possession of a small amount of cannabis a criminal offence in Malta?

I was stopped and found to be carrying what I would describe as a small personal-use quantity of cannabis in Malta. I've heard Malta has changed its laws around cannabis in recent years but I'm not entirely clear on where the actual legal line is now. Am I facing a criminal charge for this?

Can a witness statement I gave Maltese police be corrected later?

I gave a statement to the police in Malta as a witness to an incident, but after thinking about it more, I believe I got a couple of details wrong, not deliberately, just genuine confusion about timing. Can I go back and correct my statement, or am I stuck with what I originally said?

Can Maltese police search my home without a warrant?

Police came to my apartment in Malta and wanted to search it in connection with an investigation, but they did not show me any written warrant, just said they had 'authority' to enter. Is this legal, and what should I have done in that moment?

What happens if someone drops criminal charges against me in Malta?

Someone filed a police report against me in Malta over what I believe was a minor personal dispute, but they've now told me directly they want to withdraw the complaint and don't want to pursue it further. Does that automatically mean the whole matter goes away?
