I gave a statement to the police in Malta as a witness to an incident, but after thinking about it more, I believe I got a couple of details wrong, not deliberately, just genuine confusion about timing. Can I go back and correct my statement, or am I stuck with what I originally said?

Yes, it is generally both possible and appropriate to correct a genuine factual error in a witness statement you previously gave to the police, since the goal of the criminal justice process under the Criminal Code, Chapter 9 of the Laws of Malta, is to establish an accurate picture of events, and a witness who realises they made an honest mistake is expected to clarify this rather than simply letting an inaccurate statement stand uncorrected, provided the correction is made honestly and promptly once you realise the error, rather than appearing to be a strategic change made much later for other reasons. Contact the investigating officer or police station where you gave your original statement and explain clearly that you want to correct specific details, being precise about exactly what was inaccurate and why, ideally documenting this correction in writing or through a formal supplementary statement so there is a clear record of both your original account and the correction. If the matter has already progressed to court proceedings and you may be called to testify, it would also be worth mentioning this correction to a lawyer, since how and when a witness statement is corrected can sometimes become a point of discussion during questioning.

I was stopped at a police checkpoint in Malta and asked to take a breathalyser test, which came back over the legal limit. The officer mentioned court. I assumed this would just result in a fine like a normal traffic violation, but now I'm worried it's more serious than that. Can you clarify?

Can my Maltese employer report me to police over a workplace dispute?

I had a serious disagreement with my manager at work in Malta over money I believe I was legitimately owed, and things got heated verbally. My employer is now threatening to report me to the police for 'threatening behaviour', which I think is a wild exaggeration of what actually happened. Can something like this really escalate into a criminal matter?

I've been feeling unsafe walking home late at night in Malta and I'm considering carrying a small can of pepper spray for personal protection. I want to make sure I'm not accidentally breaking the law by doing this before I actually buy one.
