I’m applying for new home insurance in Malta, and I had a claim on a previous policy, unrelated to my current property, a few years ago. I’m not sure whether this is something I’m actually required to mention on my new application, or whether it’s only relevant if it relates to the specific property being insured now.

Insurance applications generally require you to answer disclosure questions honestly and completely, and Maltese insurance law, connected to principles under the Insurance Business Act, Chapter 403 of the Laws of Malta, and the Insurance Distribution Act, Chapter 487 of the Laws of Malta, generally reflects the broader principle that an applicant must disclose all material facts relevant to the insurer's risk assessment, which typically does include previous claims history, even where the prior claim related to a different property, since claims history is generally considered relevant to how an insurer assesses your overall risk profile as a policyholder, not narrowly limited to claims on the exact same property being newly insured. Rather than trying to independently judge whether your previous claim is relevant enough to mention, the safer approach is to carefully read the specific disclosure questions on your application form, since these will typically make clear exactly what claims history you're being asked to provide, and if in doubt about whether something needs to be disclosed, err on the side of including it rather than omitting it, given the serious consequences of a claim later being invalidated for non-disclosure. If you're genuinely uncertain about what needs to be disclosed, asking your insurance broker or the insurer directly for clarification before submitting the application is a sensible precaution.

My car insurance policy in Malta is coming up for renewal, and the renewal quote I've received is significantly higher than what I paid last year, without any accidents, claims, or other obvious changes on my part that I can identify. Is my insurer required to explain a increase like this, or can they simply raise the price however much they choose?

I submitted a claim to my car insurance provider in Malta after an accident, and they've now rejected it, citing a policy exclusion I don't fully understand or agree applies to my situation. I feel like I'm just being told 'no' without a proper explanation. What are my options for challenging this?
